Almost every inch of this square is worked, and it rewards a fine nib. A great arch of concentric rings and scrollwork rises behind the scene like a window, and a bare mountain peak pushes up into the middle of it. In front of that stand rank after rank of fir trees, the nearest ones enormous, every branch built from layered rows of needles that go dark where they overlap. A pale path winds out of the trees down the center. A man walks along it with a pack on his shoulders, his beard short and his boots laced high. A small boy strides ahead of him in a T-shirt and shorts, while a second child stands off to the right with one hand raised in a wave and a little pack of his own. The bottom quarter of the sheet belongs entirely to plants. Two huge open blooms sit in the left corner, a rose and several daisies crowd the path edge, fine stippled undergrowth fills the gaps, and broad curved leaves with a pine cone close off the right. Pick a couple of greens for the trees and keep your brighter colors back for that front border.
