The dock does most of the drawing here. Its boards run straight toward you in sharp perspective, wide at the bottom of the page and narrowing as they reach the far end, with a grain line scored into almost every plank. That gives you a big striped surface to work across before you touch either figure. Dad sits on the raised end at the left, one leg crossed over the other, rod angled up and out over the water. His child kneels further along the boards with a smaller rod bending under its own weight. Neither of them is reeling anything in. They are just sitting, which is the point of the picture. Cattails fill both edges. The clump on the right stands tall with fat seed heads, and the blades on the left fan out low near the water line. Two greens used side by side will keep the two clumps from blurring together. Everything above the horizon is left blank. That empty sky is room for whatever you want: a wash of pale blue, a low sun, a few birds, or nothing at all if you would rather let the dock carry the page on its own.
