A boy stands at a kitchen counter with a brush held up in one hand, mid decision, looking down at what is in front of him. Five eggs are lined up along the counter, every one of them completely blank. Beside them sit a cup and a small shallow dish. Behind him the kitchen is drawn plainly: a wall oven with a window in the door, a run of cabinets and drawers with simple pull handles, a counter edge, and a window frame letting light in at the back.
The five blank eggs are the whole point of this sheet. They are big, oval and empty, and whatever goes on them is your child's design rather than the illustrator's. Stripes, zigzags, dots, names, faces.
The kitchen behind is deliberately quiet, mostly long straight lines, so it fills fast and stays out of the way.
Dyeing eggs is older than the Easter it attaches to. Decorated ostrich eggs have been found in southern African sites tens of thousands of years old, and the practice of coloring eggs in spring runs through Persian, Greek and Slavic traditions well before it became a church custom.
