The wreath fills the sheet almost edge to edge. It is built from overlapping sprigs of pine, each needle drawn separately, with clusters of holly leaves and berries worked in at intervals and two bells hanging at the base from a ribbon. There is no background at all, just the ring itself, which makes it a self contained design and a good candidate for framing once finished. Adult level.

A circular composition is easier if you work around it rather than across it. Do all the holly first, then all the berries, then the pine, moving right around the ring each time. That keeps the color consistent and stops one side ending up darker than the other. Two greens are worth using, a blue toned green for the pine and a warmer yellow green for the holly, so the two plants stay distinguishable.

Holly berries are a winter food supply rather than a decoration. They are too bitter for most birds until several frosts have softened them, which is exactly the point at which other food has run out.
