The tree fills most of the sheet, needles drawn in short flicking strokes, and around thirty round ornaments hang from its branches, each one carrying its own swirl or stripe inside the circle. A five pointed star sits at the top. To the right the artist has put a fireplace with two stockings pegged along the mantel and a wreath on the wall above it, and a heap of wrapped presents with ribbon bows spreads across the floorboards at the base. Older children and adults both get on with this one, mostly because of the ornament count.

Those thirty circles are the whole page. Rather than color them at random, pick three or four colors and repeat them in a rhythm around the tree, which stops the eye from getting lost. Leave a small white crescent on one side of every bauble and it will read as glass instead of a flat disc. Green pencil laid in two passes, lighter at the branch tips, gives the needles more life than a single flat green.

Electric tree lights only became common after 1917, when a teenager in New York started selling safe prewired strings. Before that people clipped real candles to the branches and kept a bucket of water standing nearby.
