Carolers on a snowy path with their sheet music open, singing outside a house strung with lights.

A small group stands on a snowy path in coats and scarves, mouths open, sheet music held out in front of them. Behind them a house is trimmed for the season with lights along the roofline and a wreath on the door, and a lamp post throws a circle of light over the singers. The outlines are clean and the background is kept sparse. This one suits about five upward.

Winter clothing is the opportunity here. Give each caroler a differently patterned scarf, stripes on one, dots on another, and the group stops looking like one repeated person. Warm reds and mustards on the figures against cool blues and grays in the snow behind them will push the singers forward off the paper.

Caroling started as something quite unlike what we do now. Medieval carols were dance songs, performed in a ring with the singers moving in step, and the word itself comes from a French term for a circle dance. Only later did the singing detach from the dancing and move to people's doorsteps.
