Everything about this drawing is soft. The pup is nearly circular, its fins are short and blunt, its eyes are two large filled dots, and its grin runs most of the way across its face. Even the teeth are drawn as a gentle zigzag rather than as points.
It sits in a shallow oval of water with two ripple rings spreading around it. The waterline runs off to both edges as a single broken stroke, and a few sprigs of grass stand at the left and right margins. Beyond that the sheet is empty.
The very large enclosed areas make this one of the easiest pages in the whole collection to finish. A young child can fill the body in one sweep without leaving the outline, and nothing anywhere demands a fine tip.
The ripple rings are the one place to be careful. Keeping them lighter than the surrounding water is what makes the pup look like it is sitting in the puddle rather than floating above it.
Nothing about the drawing suggests birth despite the title. What it shows is a very small shark in very shallow water, looking pleased about it.
