The shark is clear of the water at a steep angle with its mouth open, and the sea underneath it is the real subject: a set of curling breakers drawn in the Japanese woodblock manner, with spray beading off the crests and tight spirals rolling through the troughs. Corner flourishes frame the top of the page and two flowers sit in the bottom corners. There are also butterflies in the sky above the waves, which is not something you get over open ocean, but they give the empty top third something to do. Waves like these want a limited palette. Two blues and one mid tone, with the crests and the spray left white, will hold together far better than four or five colors ever will. Keep the shark pale so it stays the thing your eye lands on first. Ten and up. Great whites really do come out of the water like this. Off the South African coast they hunt seals by rising fast from below, and the strike carries them right into the air.
