Three puppies come toward you in a row with their front paws down in long grass, and the grass is drawn as individual blades rather than as a texture, so the bottom half of the sheet is roughly two hundred separate strokes. That is the commitment this page asks of you. Above them, a border of curling stems, small flowers and paisley shapes runs across the top and down both sides. The puppies themselves are simple by comparison: soft rounded heads, floppy ears, and one of the three with its tongue out. There is a quiet trick available in the grass. Take the blades directly behind the dogs in your palest green and the ones along the front edge in your darkest, and the three of them will sit inside the grass rather than on top of it. Use pencils, because a marker will flood between blades. Ten and up, or a patient eight. Puppies are born blind and deaf both, and the ear canals only open at around two to three weeks, so a litter spends its first fortnight navigating entirely by smell and touch.
