A Shiba sits square on with its thick tail curled around to one side, and that tail is the best thing on the page. It is drawn as a mass of long overlapping fur strokes that all sweep in one direction, so parallel pencil strokes running the same way will give it real volume with no blending at all. The ears are sharp triangles with the insides already darkened. A ruff of fur breaks the chest into a V shape, the muzzle is short and fox like, and both front paws show their toe lines clearly. Behind the dog a large circular mandala fills the space, with four flowers pushed out into the corners. Hold the background to two light tones and let the dog carry the warm red brown the breed actually comes in, keeping the chest, muzzle and inner legs cream. That cream and red split has a name, urajiro, and it is required by the breed standard. The Shiba is the smallest of Japan's six native dog breeds, and the tightly curled tail is one of the first things a judge looks for.
