Every curl on this poodle is drawn as its own small scalloped shape, hundreds of them, stacked across the topknot, the ears, the chest and the legs. Filigree scrollwork fills all four corners and frames the puppy without touching it, leaving a band of clean white between the border and the dog.
This is an adult level page and it is slow going. Set aside real time, work one area at a time, and use sharp pencils rather than markers, which will bleed one curl into the next and lose the whole effect.
There is a trick to fur made of small repeated shapes. Rather than filling each curl flat, shade only the lower edge of each one and leave the top white. The coat then reads as three dimensional without you having to plan any shadows.
The poodle clip is not decoration for its own sake. The breed was developed as a water retriever, and the pattern of dense fur left over the chest and joints kept the working parts warm while the shaved areas cut drag in the water.
