Fur is the whole subject of this drawing. The chow chow's mane spreads out from the head in every direction, built from thousands of short tapered strokes that overlap into a thick ruff around the shoulders and down the chest.
The face sits deep inside all that coat. Small dark eyes peer out from under a heavy brow, the muzzle is broad and short, and a scatter of whisker dots marks each cheek. Four chunky paws anchor the bottom of the page, each one drawn with separate curved claws.
Behind the dog a pale filigree frame of flowers and scrollwork fills the corners and edges. It is printed in a much lighter line than the puppy, so it stays in the background rather than competing with the mane.
Take this one slowly. The fur strokes are not cells to be filled individually, so the usual approach is to lay a base tone over a whole region and let the printed strokes show through as the darker hairs. Working from the outer edge of the mane inward keeps the direction of the coat consistent.
