A pig has propped itself up on a fence to see what you are doing. Its head and shoulders clear the top rail, both front trotters are hooked over the edge, and it looks straight out of the page at the reader.

The fence is the detailed half of this drawing. It runs the full width of the sheet, built from upright boards with a long rail across them, and every board carries its own grain lines. Grass grows in a thick band along the bottom. Above the rail the pig is much simpler: big ears, a broad snout with two dark nostrils, and two round eyes set wide.

That split makes the page useful for two children at once. A younger one can take the pig, which is all large open shapes, while an older one works through the fence boards one at a time.

For the fence, resist coloring every board the same. Vary the shade slightly from plank to plank and the wood immediately looks like wood. The grass along the bottom is drawn as separate blades with white showing between them, so it holds up well to two or three greens rather than one flat wash.
