Three penguins stand close together in the lower half of this page. Two on the left face one another with their beaks almost touching, and a taller one on the right looks away over its shoulder. All three are drawn with the same treatment: the front of the body is left completely open and pale, while the head, back and the outside of each flipper are filled with dense parallel hatching that follows the curve of the body.

That hatching is worth a word before you start. It is close, fine and covers a lot of the page, but every stroke is separate with white paper between, so the dark areas still take color. It simply reads darker than the open fronts.

Above and around them the air is full of drawn snow. Two large six armed snowflakes with branching arms sit in the top corners, smaller ones are scattered between, and dozens of plain circles and rings of different sizes drift through the gaps. Low mounds of snow run across behind the birds and a few small flowers sit in the bottom right.

The contrast between the hatched backs and the open fronts is the whole design here.
