A penguin and a bear stand side by side across the middle of this page, leaning lightly against one another. The penguin is on the left, upright and smooth, with a long pale front panel, a solid dark back and hood, one round eye and a long straight beak. Its flipper is ruled with close parallel lines and its feet spread into three toes each.
The bear on the right is the opposite in every way. It is built almost entirely from short overlapping feather shaped strokes, layered from the crown down the chest and along both forelegs, so the whole animal reads as deep shaggy fur. Its muzzle is broad, one eye sits inside a large dark patch, and both front paws show rows of blunt claws.
Behind them rises a tall arch of flowers and scrollwork drawn in a much lighter line, packed with open blooms, paisley curls and small round buds. More flowers sit in the corners and along the bottom.
The bear is a long job and the penguin is a quick one, which makes this a good page to split across two sittings.
