A baby penguin sits facing you, and almost the entire bird is one enormous rounded body. What gives it away as a chick rather than an adult is the outline itself: instead of a smooth curve, the whole edge is drawn as a ragged sawtooth of short spikes, running right around the head, down both sides and across the bottom, so the bird reads as covered in loose down.

A second ragged line separates the paler front from the sides, and a scatter of tiny paired flicks is dotted across the belly to suggest more fluff. Two large oval eyes sit high on the head with round pupils, highlight dots and a small curved brow above each. The beak is a short triangle with a line under it.

Both flippers stick straight out sideways from the body, smooth edged and much plainer than everything else. Two wide feet rest at the bottom, each with three rounded toes marked off by short lines.

Nothing else appears on the sheet. The chick floats on bare paper, which keeps the count of separate shapes tiny while the fluffy outline gives an older child somewhere to be careful.
