A penguin chick sits inside the broken lower half of its egg, filling the middle of this page. The shell is cracked in a jagged line all the way around and is decorated inside with fine swirls and a patterned oval near the front, so even the broken shell has something to work on.
The chick itself is round and soft. Short feathery strokes cover the crown and run down the outside of both flippers, the front is left smooth and open, and a large oval eye with a solid pupil sits beside a long pointed beak. Both feet are lifted up and forward over the shell rim, each drawn with three long toes.
The upper two thirds of the sheet is a heavy garland. Big open flowers with dense button centers hang from curling stems, trailing leaves and small berry shapes fill the gaps, and the whole arrangement arches over the chick from one top corner to the other. Two more blooms sit low at the sides.
The flowers and the chick are two very different weights of work, so it is worth picking your shades for one before starting the other.
