A seated mother panda has both arms wrapped around a pair of cubs, one tucked under her chin and one pressed into her side, and all three faces look straight out at you. The drawing leans on solid black rather than outline alone: ears, eye patches, shoulders and the fur along her back arrive already filled, which means a large part of this sheet is decided before you pick up a pencil. What remains is generous. Her chest and belly are pale and speckled with small oval tufts, the cubs show soft hatching over their limbs, and four paw pads sit along the bottom with every toe drawn separately.
Behind the group the artist filled each corner with garden linework: cosmos and wild rose heads, long sprays of leaves, bamboo blades near the feet and a scatter of tiny buds. That border is where colored pencils earn their keep, since the shapes are small and packed closely together.
