This bird is caught mid beat with both wings pushed out to the edges of the page, the left one sweeping down and the right one raised high. Every primary feather has been drawn as its own long tapered shape and then barred across with short strokes, so the two wings hold most of the line work on the sheet. The head turns towards you, hooked beak forward, with a fine speckled cap and a sharp brow ridge over each eye. The body carries close rows of small crescents, and the tail spreads into a short banded fan below. Loose circles of falling snow drift through the open background, and a band of curling scrollwork runs along the bottom edge with two small birds tucked in at the sides. Because the wings are barred rather than scaled, this suits anyone who likes to work in strips: shade one feather, skip one, and the wing gains depth with no blending at all. Snowy owls are the heaviest owl in North America and the males really do turn almost pure white with age, so leaving the body bare and coloring only the bars is true to the bird as well as being the fastest route to a page that looks finished.
