The joke lands immediately, which is most of why this sheet works for young children. A plainly drawn owl stands on a stack of five hardback books, and a pair of perfectly round spectacles sits across its face with the bridge crossing the top of its beak and both arms running back towards the tufts. Inside the frames the eyes stay large and simple with heavy pupils. The body is a single smooth shape with a scattering of short chest ticks, and two curved wings press against the sides. The books below are the other half of the drawing and they are stacked slightly out of line, each one showing a spine and a block of pages, with the bottom volume tilted so the pile looks a little unsteady. Give every book a different color and the stack becomes the brightest thing on the page, which suits a classroom wall or a reading corner display. The spectacle lenses are worth leaving clear rather than filling, otherwise the eyes disappear behind them. Owls cannot move their eyes in the socket at all, which is exactly why they swivel their whole head instead, and it makes the glasses a better fit for the bird than the artist may have intended.
