There is no perch, no branch and no background on this page. The bird's head and shoulders are cropped so close that the ear tufts run off the top edge and the chest fills the bottom two thirds, which makes it the most demanding sheet in the owl set and also the most rewarding. Between the tufts sits a large woven medallion of interlocking shapes, and beneath it the facial disc splits into hundreds of fine radiating strokes running out from the eyes. Both eyes are large and open with a heavy ring around each, and the hooked beak sits low and small between them. Below the throat the drawing turns into one continuous field of overlapping feather scales, each one outlined and many carrying an internal line, and they get slightly larger as they move down the page. A faint crown motif arches across the very top. Fine tipped pens or well sharpened pencils are the only sensible tools here, and it is better to treat the feathers in bands of tone than to try and vary every single one. Work outward from the eyes and stop whenever you like. This page looks deliberate at any stage of completion, which is not true of most detailed sheets.
