The whole sheet is a tall slice of tree trunk, and a keyhole shaped hollow opens near the top of it. Inside sits a single owl, small enough that white paper surrounds it on every side, looking straight out with two large ringed eyes and a stubby triangular beak. Two shallow tufts break the top of its head. Its chest carries about a dozen short marks and nothing else, its wings are a single curve each, and four toes grip the bottom lip of the opening. The trunk around the hollow is described in only four or five long grain lines, and one bare branch crosses the very top corner. This is the easiest sheet in the owl set by a clear margin, and that is its use. Hand it to a two or three year old, or to a child who gets frustrated by pages that ask for control they do not have yet. The hollow gives you a natural trick as well. Color the trunk in any mid tone and leave the inside of the opening dark, and the bird jumps forward off the page. Owls tuck into holes like this during daylight, sitting still and quiet while smaller birds mob the tree around them.
