An old storm lantern with a crossed glass panel makes the perch, and the owl above it is drawn in the same clean bold outline.

Two objects, both simple, sitting one on top of the other. The lantern takes the lower half: a round vented cap, a tall wire handle arching over it, a glass body braced with a cross of two diagonal struts, a small burner block at its base and a stepped foot with ring lines around it. Above, the owl stands with four toes hooked over the lantern's cap, its body a plain rounded shape and its eyes two big circles with heavy pupils under a pair of soft tufts. Short chest ticks run in loose rows, and each wing is one long curved line laid against the body. Nothing on this page needs a fine tip. The lantern is the interesting decision. Metal parts done in gray or black with the glass panel left white gives you the strongest contrast, and a child who wants the lamp lit can put yellow behind the struts instead and get a real glow out of it. Old lanterns like this burned paraffin and were built with that wire cage precisely so they could be hung from a hook or a branch, which makes the owl's choice of perch a reasonable one.
