Leaves are the point of this one. Nine or ten of them fill the space around the bird, some still attached to thin twigs entering from the corners, others falling free through open sky, and they come in two shapes: broad maple with pointed lobes, and narrower ones with wavy edges closer to oak. The owl in the middle is drawn simply. Its body is a smooth rounded shape, its eyes are two large circles with heavy solid pupils, and short V ticks run down the chest in three neat rows. Two curved wings sit tight against the sides and a blunt tail drops below the branch, which crosses the page horizontally and carries its own small leaves at either end. Autumn gives you an easy palette and a hard choice. Reds, oranges and yellows on the leaves are the obvious call, but if the owl also goes brown the page turns into one warm block. Try a gray or slate bird against the warm leaves instead. Deciduous trees drop their leaves because the tree seals off each stem to save water for winter, which is why the color changes first and the fall comes after.
