The adult takes up the top half of the page and she is the detailed one. Her brow carries a symmetrical scrolled band, her facial disc breaks into fine radiating strokes, and her breast and folded wing run in tight overlapping scallops all the way down. Beneath her stand two owlets, both drawn rounder and softer, with fluffy outlines and much larger eyes relative to their heads. They lean into each other with their wings touching. The nest under all three is the best part of the drawing: a thick tangle of twigs woven over and under itself, with leaves and a few small buds pushing out around the rim. Loose flourishes and scattered five petal flowers float in the background and stop the top corners looking empty. There is a real difference in difficulty between the mother and her chicks, which makes this a good sheet for two people at once. A younger child takes the owlets and their broad open shapes, an adult or older sibling works the mother's scallops with a fine pen. Note that the owlets' eyes have come out with a pale yellow tint already in them rather than fully blank, so plan a darker shade there if you want them to match.
