The owl sits square to you with both ear tufts raised, and the artist has filled the space between them with a dense woven medallion that reads almost like lace. Everything below the face turns into feather scaling: small rounded scallops across the breast, longer pointed ones down the folded wing, then a set of long barred flight feathers that drop past the branch and off the lower edge of the sheet. The branch itself runs corner to corner in a rough diagonal, drawn with split bark lines and a few small leaf sprigs, and the toes wrap right over the top of it with each claw picked out. Faint sprays of filigree sit in the two upper corners and give the page a framed look without crowding the bird. This one rewards patience rather than speed. Fine liners or sharp pencils hold the scallops better than crayons, which will flood two or three feathers at once. A great horned owl really does have those tufts, and they are not ears at all, just feathers it raises when it wants to look larger. Try a warm brown that gets darker as it moves down the body, and leave the brow medallion pale so it stays the first thing anyone notices.
