A lion sleeps on a low rise with its eyes drawn as two closed curves and its muzzle relaxed. The forepaws cross in front of it, toes marked with short lines, the hind leg tucks under the body, and the tail runs far out to the right to end in a small filled tuft. Its mane is a band of quick short strokes rather than a solid mass, so the face stays open.

A broad tree leans over the whole scene from the right. Long bark lines groove the trunk, four heavy limbs reach out across the top of the sheet, and clusters of small pointed leaves hang from them with a few drifting loose in the air. Clumps of tall grass and a couple of low mounds fill the foreground, and two tiny birds sit in the white sky.

There is a natural division here worth using. Keep the canopy and the ground cover in cooler greens and let the animal sit warm against them, and the shade this scene promises will appear without any gray at all. The leaves are small but repetitive, which makes them good work for a marker rather than a pencil. The tail tuft is already filled in.
