A lion stands in profile on top of a large boulder, chest lifted and muzzle raised toward something off the right edge. The mane falls in long separated strands down the neck and chest, and the body behind it is drawn with almost no interior line at all. Narrow bands mark each foreleg above the paw, and the tail sweeps back across the rock and drops over the left edge with a curl at the tip.

The boulder takes the whole bottom third of the sheet. A handful of crack lines split it into angular planes, and a few blades of grass push up at either side. Above the lion there is nothing but paper.

The bare upper half is doing real work in this composition, so resist the urge to fill it. The rock reads best when its planes get slightly different values of one color rather than several different colors, which keeps it stony instead of quilted. The lion needs only two tones, one for the body and a deeper one for the mane strands, and the small leg bands are the natural place for a third. Leaving the top white is what gives this page its height.
