Three lions rest along a single ground line. The adult male lies at the left with his forelegs stretched out and crossed at the wrist, his mane built from short overlapping strokes that fan around a calm, heavy lidded face. Beside him two cubs sit upright, shoulder to shoulder, each with wide round ears, a small triangular nose and a spray of whiskers. The cub on the right lets its long tail curve out across the grass and finish in a tuft.

Everything above and below that ground line is bare paper. A few sprigs of grass punctuate the line at either end and one small clump sits in front of the adult, and that is the whole setting.

The three bodies carry almost no interior detail, which leaves big uninterrupted areas to fill. Use that: keep the cubs a lighter tone than the adult so the size difference reads even before anyone looks at the mane. The mane strokes are the only fine work on the sheet and they take a darker pencil well. If you want depth without adding clutter, shade lightly under the crossed forelegs and along the bottom of each cub.
