Two cubs have tumbled into each other and stayed there. One lies on its back with a paw hooked over the other's shoulder, and the second leans across it with its chin down. Both wear the faint spotting that lion cubs are born with, drawn as small dots across the flanks and legs, and their oversized paws sit in the foreground. A thin vine of leaves and open flowers frames three sides.

Fur is worked in fine short strokes and the faces are small, so this suits an older child or an adult working with sharp pencils.

Spots first, then coat. Lay a light sand tone over the whole body, let it settle, then dot the markings in a warmer brown on top. Doing it the other way round buries them.

Those spots are not decoration. Cubs are born with them as camouflage and most fade by about three months, though some lionesses keep faint traces on the belly for life.
