Four horses run as one group across the middle of this page, all of them headed the same way with necks stretched low and forward. Their manes flick up in short spikes and their legs are thrown out at full extension, so the whole band reads as a single wave of movement. Small dots and flecks scatter up behind the rearmost hooves where they have struck wet sand.
Two long horizontal lines behind them do all the work of the setting: one marks where the water reaches, the other the edge of the flat sea beyond, ruled with a few soft ripples.
The animals themselves are almost pure outline. There is barely any shading within their bodies, just enough of a curve here and there to show a chest or a rump.
Take a moment before you start to trace which leg belongs to which horse, because they overlap in the middle of the group where all four sets cross.
Notice also how much of this sheet is bare paper. The band of action sits low and narrow with wide white above and below it, and that emptiness reads as open beach and open sky without a single line being drawn for either.
