Two heads fill this page, turned in toward each other until the muzzles touch at the center. Both are seen very nearly straight on, which lets you follow the long bones of each face from the ears down to the nose, picked out with fine hatching along the bridges.

The manes are the real event. They pour away from the crests in wide ribbon like locks that reach the left and right edges of the paper, layered over one another so there are dozens of separate strands waiting to be filled. Each eye is a long almond shape with lashes, and the pointed ears are lined on their inner surfaces.

An arch passes behind them, built from a flat band carrying a repeating hooked border, the kind of squared off meander you see on old pottery. It is a pattern and not writing. Large blossoms with long curling stamens open in the upper corners.

Under the touching noses sits a fan of scrolling vines, and a big five petal flower with a coiled center anchors each bottom corner.

Giving the two horses slightly different shades will keep them from merging where they meet, which is the one place on this sheet where the outlines run close together.
