This is the busiest sheet of the group, and its detail sits in the setting rather than in the horse. Canyon walls lean in from the left and right edges, built out of long stacked bands that follow the curve of the stone the way contour lines follow a hillside on a map. The walls narrow toward a notch at the back of the gorge, and that notch holds the only real patch of open sky.

The mustang crosses the middle of the page at a gallop, front legs reaching and hind legs driving off behind. Its mane stands up in short brushed spikes and the tail trails out in fine separated strands. There is no tack and no rider anywhere on it.

The canyon floor ahead is scattered with hundreds of loose pebbles, each outlined as its own small closed shape. Low desert plants with ragged petals grow among them, bigger and more open where they reach the two bottom corners.

Set aside proper time for this one. The rock bands suit a graded approach, going a step darker at each layer, and holding the pebbles to two or three alternating shades keeps the floor reading as stone rather than as confetti.
