The mane is the reason to print this one. It has been separated into three heavy plaits that start at the crest and travel down the side of the neck, each twisted like rope and shaded with short strokes so the strands read as over and under. The longest tapers to a thin tail of hair that hooks into a curl near the bottom of the page. A smooth forelock is combed across the brow between the ears.
Only the head and neck are shown, angled so the far cheek disappears and the near eye sits high and wide open, ringed with lashes. Fine lines run along the bridge of the nose and gather at the nostril and the soft corner of the mouth.
Around the portrait, four large blooms open in the corners on long springy stems, petals thin as ribbons. Scrolling tendrils fill the gaps between them, and a handful of small hearts drift near the ears and along the lower edge.
Notice that the flowers and scrollwork are drawn in a much lighter line than the horse. Light pencil on the background and firmer color on the braids preserves that difference, and the mane stays the thing your eye lands on first.
