A horse stands square in the middle of a meadow, head turned slightly toward you, with a long mane sweeping across its neck and a full tail trailing down to the grass. The body is drawn with clean, uninterrupted outlines and very little internal detail, which makes it the largest and easiest area on the sheet. Wildflowers crowd the foreground, grass blades rise between the hooves, and low hills roll across the background under a sky of soft clouds. Horse coats are more fun than a single flat brown suggests. Try a mid tone across the whole body first, then press harder under the belly, along the top of the neck, and around the legs, and the muscle shapes will appear on their own. A mane in a lighter shade than the coat, cream against chestnut for instance, reads as palomino and looks striking. The flowers at the bottom are small, so pick three colors and scatter them rather than planning each bloom. Keep the hills pale and the sky paler still, because a soft background lets the horse stay the subject.
