Two fish share this page, stacked one above the other, and they are patterned in deliberately different ways.
Five broad vertical bands cross the upper fish from its back down to its belly, each a wide open strip. Along its spine sits a long ridged fin drawn as a run of short pleats, and its tail fans out at the left on straight spokes.
Small round scales cover the lower fish instead, packed tight across the whole flank, perhaps a hundred of them. It sits partly behind a branching coral growing up from the bottom edge, and the coral's arms cross in front of its belly and its tail.
That coral is the third element, and it is drawn as a bare branching skeleton, all forks and blunt tips, with open space between the limbs.
Contrast between the two fish is worth using. Broad bands invite four or five strong flat colors; a field of small circles wants one hue held throughout with only slight variation, or it will turn to noise.
Color the coral last. It overlaps the lower fish, and deciding its tone once you can see what is behind it is easier than guessing at it first.
