Facing left, this fish makes its body the entire exercise. From gill to tail it is filled with rows of teardrop shapes, each carrying a central rib, and smaller plain circles are tucked into the gaps between rows. Well over sixty separate shapes sit in that field.

The rows are not rigid. They follow the curve of the body, tightening near the belly and opening out across the flank, so the pattern never settles into a grid.

Around the edges the drawing changes character. A spiky ridge runs the length of the back as a row of short pleats. Long straight spokes make up the broad tail, which is separated from the body by a banded collar of three curved strips. One pectoral fans forward over the pattern with its own fine ruling, and two small fins sit below.

Almost nothing happens on the head, one round eye and a blunt snout, which gives the eye somewhere quiet to sit.

A limited palette works best on a field this busy. Three colors cycled across the teardrops, with a fourth reserved for the circles, will hold together where sixty separate choices will not.
