One horizontal line crosses the upper quarter of the page, and everything changes across it. Above, three lily pads float flat on the surface, each a circle with a wedge cut from it, and a few loose swirls suggest ripples. Below, the koi.

Long and turning through a shallow curve, the fish holds its head up at the right with two short barbels at the mouth, and sweeps its tail down and left into a wide trailing fan. Large open scales cover the whole flank in overlapping rows, closer to a honeycomb than to fine fish scales, and every one is big enough to take its own color.

A ridged band along the back serves as the dorsal fin, and both pectorals are fanned and ruled with fine lines that play against those broad scales.

Koi markings are famously blocky: solid patches of orange, black and white with hard edges rather than gradients. The large scales suit that exactly. Pick four or five neighboring scales, fill them as one patch, leave the next group white, then start again further along.

Below the fish the page is empty. Leaving it that way preserves the sense of deep open water.
