The face is the point of this sheet. Both eyes are drawn oversized, with a large dark pupil, a bright highlight and a row of lashes above each, and the mouth lifts at the corners into a small closed smile. A short tuft of hair sprouts from the crown.
Behind the animal the square is filled edge to edge with a fine background of curling stems, fronds and spirals, and larger flowers with rounded petals and beaded centers sit in the corners and along the lower edge. The elephant itself is left almost completely blank by contrast, with nothing on its body but the ring lines of the trunk and a fold inside each ear.
That contrast is deliberate and worth protecting. The temptation is to pattern the elephant too, but the composition only holds while it stays the open shape in a busy field.
Toes are drawn as separate rounded pads at the front, the tusks are short and stubby, and a thin tail curls out at the right.
The background lines are fine enough that pencil will behave better than marker there. If you do want marker, keep it on the elephant and the corner flowers and leave the swirl field white or barely tinted.
