A shaggy dog sits in a low basin of water with its tongue out and its coat soaked into spikes, water running off the rim in thick drips and spreading in rings around the tub. A bottle of shampoo tips in from the top left corner, and a border of flowers, bows and swirls runs around all four sides inside a ruled frame.
The wet coat is the appeal. Instead of soft fur, the strokes are long, straight and clumped, and filling them in one direction from the top down exaggerates the effect.
Keep the water pale. If you treat the ripples as strongly as the dog, the tub will compete with the animal, and the whole point of the picture is the miserable, dripping face in the middle.
Dogs shake at roughly four cycles a second and can throw off most of the water in their coat in under a second, a mechanism engineers have studied for use in drying machinery.
