A puppy stands in the middle of a shallow puddle with both front paws down and water fanning up on either side. Loose droplets hang in the air around it, drawn as simple ovals. The puddle is a flat outlined shape with two ripple lines inside, and there is no background at all.

Everything here is large and rounded, which puts it well within reach of a three or four year old. The floating droplets are a bonus. They are small enough to be interesting, but missing the line on one does not spoil anything.

Water is a good excuse to use colors that are not realistic. A puddle in bright turquoise or purple looks entirely at home on a page this cartoonish, and it saves the picture from being a brown dog on white paper.

Puppies splash on purpose. Moving water is unpredictable, and unpredictable things are what young animals investigate, which is also why the water bowl ends up on the floor.
