The fence does most of the work in this composition. It runs the full width of the page, seven pointed pickets with a horizontal rail crossing them, and the boards carry short grain marks and a couple of knots. One picket has a small round nail head drawn in.
The puppy has come up behind it. Both front paws are hooked over the top rail, toes spread, and its head and shoulders clear the fence from about the chin up. The ears hang long, the eyes are solid black with highlights, and the mouth is open in a smile with the tongue just visible.
Everything above the fence line is empty white paper, which is unusual for this set and worth using. There is room up there for a sky, a tree, a bird or a thrown ball.
The fence is the natural place to start because it is made of straight repeating shapes, and alternating two tones picket by picket looks deliberate rather than fussy. Small tufts of grass grow at the base, and the dog itself is simple enough that one color plus a darker pass on the ears will finish it.
