A young dog bounds straight toward you out of a thicket of fallen leaves, front paws already off the ground and its plumed tail raised behind it. Maple and ivy leaves fill every inch of the border, layered several deep, with seed pods and a small bird tucked into the upper area. The coat is drawn in short overlapping strokes that suggest a rough, water resistant double coat.
This one rewards patience. Adults and older teens tend to enjoy it most, and a session of thirty to forty minutes is realistic. Fine tipped markers or pencils sharpened to a point will handle the leaf veins, while anything broader floods them.
Autumn palettes almost pick themselves here. Run warm rusts and burnt orange through the leaves nearest the dog, then cool to olive and brown at the outer edge, which pushes the animal forward visually. Leaving a few leaves entirely white reads as sunlight rather than as unfinished work.
Dogs really do behave like this in leaf litter. The rustling releases a burst of trapped scent, so a pile that looks like nothing to us carries a week of information about every animal that walked past.
