A winged reptile glides across the top of the page with its beak open and its long crest swept back. Below it a volcano erupts in thin curling flames, a mountain range runs to both edges, one cloud floats at the left, and a pair of small shrubs cling to the rocks in the corner.
The line work is unusually light for a scene this dramatic. There are wide empty areas in the sky and inside the mountains, which suits crayons and younger children better than the subject might suggest.
Heat is the obvious story. Reds and oranges in the eruption, cooling to purple and gray across the mountains, and a pale sky so the flying reptile stays visible against it.
One correction worth passing on. Pterosaurs were not dinosaurs but a separate group of flying reptiles, and they were the first vertebrates to achieve powered flight, roughly eighty million years before the earliest birds.
