A hatchling has pushed the top off its egg and hooked both front claws over the broken rim. Its head is bigger than the rest of it, with one large eye, a soft rounded snout and a row of small triangles running from the crown down the spine. The tail flicks out to one side and clears the shell entirely. The egg is the other half of the picture and it does something useful: it carries seven large ovals that are wide enough for a toddler to fill without the crayon slipping outside, and the broken edge is drawn as a simple zigzag rather than as sharp shards. Almost nothing else is on the sheet, just a few grass ticks and two small pebbles near the base, so this is the one to hand to the youngest child in the house. To make the ovals pop, keep the shell pale and put your strongest color inside them. Dinosaur eggs are smaller than people expect. Even the largest ones ever found are about the size of a football, because a shell thick enough to hold anything bigger would be too thick for a hatchling to break out of.
