The cat is mid groom, head lowered, one front paw lifted to its mouth and the other tucked under, with the tail curled around to meet the front feet. Its coat is both the challenge and the reward. The fur is not an outline waiting to be filled but several thousand short tapering strokes that follow the direction of growth, dense around the ruff and along the flank, looser at the edges where individual hairs stand out against the paper. Because that line work already carries the shading, flat color will kill it. Use colored pencil lightly, let the black strokes show through, and move your hand with the fur rather than across it. The face is simpler: half closed eyes, a small triangular nose, whisker dots on each cheek. Behind the animal a symmetrical field of scrolls, curls and tiny flowers spreads to the edges of the sheet in fine line, with a round daisy planted in each corner. That backdrop should stay quiet, one pale tone at most, or it will compete with the coat. A ginger or silver tabby suits the drawing best.
