The cat sits with its back to you, settled low on a thick branch, and turns its head just far enough to show one eye and a fan of whiskers. A small bird holds the same branch a nose length away. Neither animal moves, and that stillness is the whole scene.
Four large rounded patches mark the coat, and every one of them is left completely open. That is the part worth planning before you pick up anything. The patches are big enough to take a gradient, a pattern, or a flat block of color, and the fur around them is bare white, so whatever you put inside them sets the balance of the page.
A leafy twig arches across the top left corner. The trunk climbs the right edge with long grooves cut down the bark, and the tail drops below the limb in one long curve.
The linework stays open everywhere, so markers suit this sheet as well as pencils. Nothing on it is fine enough to flood.
Try filling the four patches from one color family, then washing the bare fur in a lighter tint of the same color. Push the bark darker than both and the cat steps forward off the branch. Leave the bird pale and your eye keeps traveling back to it.
