This cat sits square to the viewer with both front legs reaching straight up above its head, paws open so the pads and toes show near the top of the page. The face looks directly out, ears pricked, and fine short strokes run through the coat to suggest fur rather than to fill it in. Chest and belly are left mostly open.
Behind the animal the sheet is filled with a balanced arrangement of blooms. Large daisies and wide petaled flowers sit at the corners and along the sides, and between them run loose curls and scrolls with tiny buds scattered through the gaps. The background is symmetrical, so its left and right halves can be matched deliberately or set against each other.
Detail sits in the background rather than the subject, which makes this a good choice for anyone who likes small areas but does not want a solid field of pattern. Work the flowers in a few repeating shades to hold the design together, then choose a single tone for the cat so it stands clear of everything around it.
