Swallowtail Butterfly Among Spring Blossoms Coloring Page

A bold black rimmed butterfly floats among five petal blossoms whose bristling middles give small hands a fiddly detail to hunt.

Blossoms come first on this sheet, and there are a lot of them. Nine or ten five petal flowers open on upright stems around the edges of the square, each with a crown of short radiating bristles, and between them sit unopened buds and pointed leaves. Two much smaller daisies float free near the top left with no stem at all.

The butterfly hovers in the middle with wings spread wide and level. Its outer margins are solid black and carry rows of white dots, both above and below, and the wing cells inside are long and narrow and separated by clean veins. The body is slim and the antennae are straight and fine, with no knobs at the ends.

That arrangement leaves a clear channel of white paper between the insect and the flowers, so the two never touch and neither one is hard to get at.

Swallowtail caterpillars carry a forked orange gland behind the head. They flip it out when threatened, and it smells strongly enough to send an ant walking the other way.

Pale pinks in the blossoms will keep the butterfly the darkest thing on the page.
