The outline refuses to behave. Where most butterflies on this site close with a smooth curve, this one steps in and out in short notches all the way round, and the hindwings pull down into two narrow tails rather than ending in a hem.
Under each tail the artist added a flourish, a curl of scrollwork that drifts out to the side like smoke off a blown candle. They are drawn much lighter than the insect and they are the only ornament on an otherwise bare sheet.
Wing interiors are patterned in three zones. Narrow beaded chains follow the outer margin, a middle band of rounded blocks sits inside that, and long tapered cells fill the rest and run back to the body. A small pointed oval marks the thorax. Both antennae curl over at the tips into open hooks.
The species takes its name from a silver mark on the underside of the hindwing, shaped close enough to the punctuation that collectors used it to separate this insect from its near twin, the comma.
Use your palest shade on the flourishes. They should hover, not compete.
